Not sure if that part is true,but its lightweight texture and superior performance has me hooked.

FYI, you can use all of these primers with or without foundation (liquid or powder) and over tinted moisturizer to minimize the appearance of large pores and enhance the look of your skin overall. GO GLAM WITH LASHES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Wearing false eyelashes can take your look from plain and ordinary to glam diva. They can make your eyes pop under natural makeup or increase your "wow" factor for a night on the town. False lashes are also a great accessory for any holiday makeup look. Whether you add lashes for everyday or just want to rock them for your next social event, how you apply them can make the difference between looking hot and looking a hot mess!

False Lashes 101

Before you embark on your lash journey, you'll need to decide whether you want to do individual or strip lashes. If you use strips, measure them against your own lashes before you apply them by placing them onto your lash line. If they are too wide for your eyes, trim them from the outside or the corner with the longest length. You can curl your lashes both before and afteryou put on false lashes. You can also apply mascara

afterward to help blend the lashes with your natural ones. Black or white adhesive is not an issue, no matter what your skin tone, because it will dry clear. Finally, all lashes are not created equal. Some are meant for a single use, others you can clean with eye makeup remover and wear again.

Individual Lashes

Individual lashes are by far the most natural looking, but

also take the most practice to apply. Placing them along the entire lash line on top will give your lashes a longer and fuller appearance. You can choose short, medium or long lengths (whatever works best with your own lashes) to make them as conservative or dramatic as you want. Or you can place them only in the center or outer corners of your lashes to give you a more wide-eyed look. Individual lashes work on most all eye shapes, especially small eyes, without overpowering them. Using a pair of tweezers, lightly dip the base of the lash into your lash adhesive, then wait about 60 seconds until it's a bit tacky. Carefully apply them at the base of your own lashes where desired.

Strip Lashes

Strip eyelashes are in one

connected row, and come in various lengths and volumes. Lashes that appear separated will provide a more natural look, while thicker more dense strip lashes will give you a much more dramatic, high-fashion appearance. You can also cut strip lashes in half and put them only on the outer corners for an instant "eye lift." To apply these, you can carefully dip the base of the entire lash into adhesive, or use the stick end of a cotton swab to coat the base with adhesive. Wait about a minute until it's tacky, then gently press onto your lashes starting at the outer corner. Try to avoid putting the glue on directly from the tube. It can be a bit messy.

Fantasy Lashes

There may be occasions when you want to really step out of the box (a la Nicky Minaj or Lady Gaga). So when you're feeling like a rock star, you can experiment with lashes adorned with glitter, feathers, fashion colors, or that have outrageous length and volume. You can even apply them to the lower lashes.

It may take a little practice, but if if you're up for the challenge you'll be making holiday eyes in no time!

GO BOLD THIS SUMMER!

Hello All!

I know it's been a while, but I'm back to blogging, and just in time for summer! And one of the hottest trends this summer is bold lip color. Now I know taking a risk of any kind can be a bit intimidating but it can be summed up in one phrase, “Just do it!”
So often we let fear hold us back...fear of being different, fear of ridicule and humiliation, or simply a fear of not being in fashion! Many celebrities have signature lipsticks, some of them in quite bold shades (Gwen Stefani’s is red). Why not create your own signature look? Whether you see it in the pages of your favorite fashion magazine or you create a mixture of color all your own take a gamble on being the trend setter. If you decide you’re ready to take one small step for makeup and one giant leap for individualism and personal style, here are a few rules of thumb to make sure you look fierce!

· Make your lip color the focus of your look. Pair it with a more subtle eye and cheek. Anything brighter will only compete with your lip color.

· Choose a color that compliments your complexion and its undertones. The right intensity or pigment is also important. Too much or too little for your skin tone will appear clownish.

· Prep you lips properly. If they’re dry use a lip balm or lip moisturizer first. If the skin color on your lips is uneven use a foundation or concealer to balance the tone. Remember, darker pigment holds color differently than lighter pigment.

· Wear it with a lip liner. Matching either the color of your lipstick or your natural lip color will enhance the lipstick and help it stay put.

· Don’t go super glossy. The color is already bold so the finish should be natural, satin or matte. Too much gloss is overkill.

When using lip color directly from the tube apply it only to the top lip and press your lips together to blend for a subtle effect. Otherwise use a lip brush for a smooth, even application.

· Be sure to blot the inside of your lips to prevent the color from transferring to your teeth.

Most importantly, have fun with it! Match it to your shoes, your handbag, your accessories---whatever mood strikes you. Wear your bold lip color with confidence and pride. And remember, it’s only lipstick!

BREAST CANCER BEAUTY: LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As a recent breast cancer survivor (one year and counting!) I know first hand that having confidence in your appearance can have a tremendous effect on the healing and recovery process. Throughout my treatment last year, sometimes putting on my favorite lipstick was the only thing that truly made me feel like my old self again. In fact, the American Cancer Society even has a program called "Look Good, Feel Better" which aims to help you do just that. It's hard to find anyone who hasn't been touched by this disease...one in eight women are diagnosed. In support of those doing battle in the war against breast cancer, here are some makeup and beauty tips to help them along on their journey.

Brow Perfection
Chemotherapy almost always results in complete hair loss, on your head, eyebrows and often eyelashes. It's best to learn how to fill in your brows before you lose them. Chose a brow color that closely matches your natural shade and practice filling in while you can still see them. Pay close attention to where brows begin and end on your face and how full they are. When the time comes, you'll be able to draw them from scratch with no need for an eyebrow stencil. Check my blog archives for the previous posting on eyebrows to find my favorite brow products.

Eye Openers
False eyelashes are great for emphasizing the eyes. And they are much easier to apply when you don't have to worry about blending them in with your own eyelashes! Strip lashes are inexpensive and come in a variety of styles. Try to get use to applying them before you lose your lash hair. Remember, practice really does make perfect. One of my favorites Ardell Fashion Lashes (about $3 drugstores).

If you've already got dark circles and puffiness, during treatment it will probably become even more pronounced. Use a hydrating concealer like Lancome Maquicomplet Complete Covera ge Concealer ($27.50) It minimizes the appearance of dark circles and fine lines and contains antioxidents to protect your skin from environmental damage. And best of all, it looks completely natural!

For a more permanent solution there's Eye Serum by RSF Skincare ($175) It contains 50% peptides (most brands have only 17%) along with other vitamins to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and skin forming fibers. In other words, it makes the eye area look young, healthy, and fabulous!

Exfoliate and Hydrate
The effects of chemotherapy and radiation can cause skin to become extremely dry and lack luster, on both your face and body. Exfoliating and hydrating will not only help enhance your complexion, but it will also invigorate and enliven the skin. Products designed specifically for those undergoing treatment are wonderful, but can be a bit costly. Instead, try switching to a richer, creamier version of your favorite moisturizer and body lotion to help combat excessive dryness. Make sure your doctor approves any product you apply directly onto areas of your skin affected by treatment.

The Bombshell is Back at the MTV Video Music Awards

Hello all!

Aside from the well deserved tributes to the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, and the drama and controversy of "Kanyegate", from a beauty perspective at this year's MTV VMA's one thing was clearly obvious--the "bombshell" is back!

You can tell just by looking at Katy Perry, Madonna or even Lady Ga Ga that this sensuous look can work on most everyone. Here are some tips to help you as you channel your inner bombshell.

Classic Rocker Chic
This take on the smokey eye is empasized with black eyeshadow and eyeliner and a subtle lip. False lashes add drama. Lips can go from soft shades of pink or coral to

almost nude. We saw it on Pink, Solange Knowels, reality star Kristin Cavalleri and Amanda Bynes.

DIY tip: Apply eyeshadow and liner before your concealer to minimize the clean up from eyeshadow "fall out". Blend powder shadow over your liner underneath the eyes to add staying power. A full coverage foundation with a mat or semi-mat finish completes the look.

Retro
Beauties like Katy Perry, Nellie Furtado and Madonna kept their bombshell look retro by toning down the eyeshadow and eyeliner or skipping it under the bottom altogether. Add the half-up hair poof and you've created the perfect retro look. DIY tip: Stick to neutral tones with your eyeshadow and play up the lip color a bit more to pull this one off. Go slightly heavier on top of the eye with both mascara and liner and keep the area under the eye as clean as possible. Perfectly groomed eyebrows are a must!
Funky

If you enjoy dancing to the beat of your own drummer like Lady Ga Ga and Cassie you can also make this look your own. The super dramatic smokey eye is contrasted with white eyeliner and (apparently) an outrageous 'do. Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester opted for a tamer hairstyle but winged out her eyeshadow to help grab attention. DIY tip: I definitely recommend you do a trial run for this look. Go heavy on the eyeshadow in either charcoal or black, line the inner rim of your eyes with white eyeliner and extend past the borders of the eyes with both white and black on the top and bottom. Add highlighter or glitter at the inner corners and under eyes for fun.

Pure Glamour

The night truly belonged to both Taylor Swift and Beyonce. Their class and sheer elegance were evident in their demeanor as well as their style. (How cool was it for Beyonce to invite Taylor onstage to complete her interrupted acceptance speech?). From the soft waves in their hair to their flawless complexions--It was old hollywood glamour at its best. DIY tip: Keep it simple. Stick with eyeshadow colors that are natural for your skintone and opt for liner in black, brown, navy or gray. False lashes are a must. Lips can be subtle or dramatic to complete your bombshell look. If you choose red or deep wine keep lip gloss to a minimum. Cheeks should match the lips but not overpower them.

BET Awards Beauty Trends

The BET Awards were held last Sunday, and in addition the the moving tributes to the late Michael Jackson, some very distinct beauty trends were evident. They might help you get a jump on your summer sizzle.

Pink Pout
In addition to beautiful skin, actress Zoe Saldana and singers LaToya Luckett and Amerie all rocked perfectly pink puckers. Looks like pink is the new red.

D.I.Y. Choose a shade of pink that compliments your skintone.Vibrant or matte shades works best when the rest of your face is neutral, while a stronger eye requires a more muted pink. Since pink is a vibrant color, a sheer gloss is always a good choice especially on deeper skintones.

Short and Chic

Everyone seemed to be sporting closely cropped do's. Singer Monica, actresses Elise Neal and Terri J. Vaughn and model Toccara of America's Next Top Model fame all went short and sassy to kick off the summer. D.I.Y. If you've ever considered it, now's the perfect time to go short. For some, it may be as simple as foregoing the hair extensions or weave for a couple of months. Have fun with it! Spike it, slick it back, or play with color and highlights. Be sure to visit your stylist for a fantastic cut.

Bright Eyes

Everything old is new again. Jewel toned shadows and eyeliner complimented the stylish outfits. Singer Alicia Keys, actress/comedian Kim Coles and young newcomer Keke Palmer (did you hear her nod to MJ...acapella?) showed us that everyone can wear color. D.I.Y. Apply bright shadow only on the lids, and gently fade into the crease by blending with a shadow brush. Compliment with a neutral eyeliner--black, brown or grey work best. Or go neutral with your eyeshadow and choose a vibrant eyeliner. Teal greens, purples, and shades of blue look fabulous on most skintones. Opt for gold, bronze or silver for a more glamourous look.

Brow Perfection

Well groomed and strong brows certainly made a statement. From former child stars Tatyana Ali and Tempestt Bledsoe to actress Meagan Good, these divas really know how to accent their "windows to the soul". D.I.Y. If you've never shaped your brows before, visit a professional. Keep re-growth to a minimum by tweezing brows between visits. Fill in sparse brows with brow powder and an angled brush. Hold them in place with brow set or a dab of hairspray on your fingertips.

Tis the season for blushing brides. Whether you hire a professional makeup artist or plan to do it yourself, the cardinal rule for applying makeup on your wedding day is simple: be true to your personal style! Whether your everyday look is earthy and natural or you're a glam girl diva, don’t stray too far off from the norm. If you do, you may end up looking back at photos from one of the most memorable days of your life wondering, “Who is that girl?” Here are some easy guidelines to follow.

Natural Beauty: Keep it Simple
If you rarely wear makeup then go for a subtle enhancement by playing up your best feature. If your eye and lip palettes are usually neutral color tones, try adding a slightly brighter or more intense shadow or eye liner to your base shade to make your eyes “pop”. Or use a different technique than usual. For example, if you normally apply a lighter shade on your lids and a deeper tone in the crease, try the deeper tone on the lid instead with the lighter shade just under the brow bone.

Glamour Girl
If your daily makeup style is full of glitz and glamour, then choose one feature and play it up! If vibrant lip color is your signature, then pair it with a subtle eye. Or play up your eyes—false lashes and all—with a toned down lip. Don’t overdo it with blush or foundation either. Make sure your colors compliment each other and work well together. You want a look that says "I look beautiful!" not "look at my makeup".

Trend Setter
Don’t get too caught up in makeup trends. Royal blue or lime green eye shadow might be all the rage for the season, but you don’t want that to overwhelm your look for this occasion. Choose colors that are timeless and classic that will compliment an enhance your skintone. Remember, great skin is always in!

Basic Rules For Any Style

1. Always do a “trial run” in advance of the big day. You don’t want any surprises.
2. Avoid foundation or powder containing titanium dioxide. This can cause your face to photograph slightly pale or ghost-like.
3. Consider your hairstyle. Up-do’s often require more shading and highlighting on the face and more color on the cheeks.
4. Don’t forget to groom your eyebrows! Waxing or tweezing should be done and least a week in advance.
5. When in doubt, consult a professional. Most makeup artists will do a bridal preview or makeup lesson to give you some ideas. If you don’t think you can duplicate it, you can always hire them for your wedding day!

BROW WOW! Get Picture Perfect Eyebrows

The easiest trick to a subtle updated look is to grooming your eyebrows. Although pencil thin brows are mostly passe (except on the runway), shaping them up a bit will not only open up your eyes, but can also take years off of your appearance. Here are some brow basics to set you on your way.

Where Do They Grow?

First, to determine where your brows should begin and end use a makeup brush or a pencil. First, lay it the long way along the side of your nose pointing towards the ceiling and the floor. Your brows should start there. Remove any hair beyond this growing between your eyes. To find your arch, move your tool to the right just past your iris (the dark circle in the center of your eyeball) to where your eye color begins. This should be your brow's highest point, or arch. To determine where they should end, move the pencil diagonally from your nose (see picture). If they stop short, you should extend them.

Say Tweeze Please.

Plucking is for chickens, we tweeze our eyebrows. Start by brushing your brows straight up. Look closely and you'll notice the stray hairs growing outside of the natural hairline. Those are the ones you should remove. Hold your skin taught with one hand, and with the other gently pull out the strays in the direction that they grow. This process may take up to 40 minutes, so don't rush it. It's best to remove a little at a time to avoid over doing it. The best thing to use? Tweezerman, hands down. (starting at $15) Their slanted tweezers can catch even the finest hairs. They last forever and they'll even sharpen them for free.

Threading

The latest trend in hair removal is eyebrow threading. It's done by usiing a double strand of cotton thread around a selected area and then twisting to remove the hair. If it sounds painful, it is. Not child-birth painful, but definitely more than a little uncomfortable. But many women like the fact that its quick and clean and often times there is no redness or irritation. I wouldn't recommend trying this one at home, visit an experienced professional.

Waxing

For the novice, this is best done professionally. If you're doing it yourself, use a quality kit and follow the directions for best results. Brush your brows in place, then warm the wax and apply it to the unwanted hair in the direction that it grows. Smooth a small stip of muslin over the top, and then quickly pull it off. It's kind of like removing a bandaid, except you take the hair with it. For first timers, plan to do this on a day off, as sometimes you may experience some redness or slight puffiness if you're sensitive. This method is great for getting rid of the peach fuzz that can tend to grow around your eyebrows. Like the idea of waxing, but not sure if you can afford the monthly tab? Get them done once to establish the shape, then tweeze the hair yourself as it starts to grow in.

Filler Up

If your brows are sparse or stop short you'll need to fill them in. Use a brow powder or eyeshadow and a flat, angled brush. Budget friendly Milani Cosmetics makes an all-in-one Brow Fix (about $6) that includes brow color and tweezers. Brush in color using soft, light strokes only where you need it. Then use a toothbrush-like brush or your fingers to blend and soften. If you prefer using a pencil, try Lancome Le Crayon Poudre Eyebrow Pencil ($23). Complete with spiral brush on one end, it's a brow powder in the convenience of a pencil. Always choose a color that looks natural with your hair and complexion. When in doubt, go a little lighter. Taupe is a good choice for fair to medium locks. No matter how dark your hair is, NEVER use jet black for your eyebrows, it's much too harsh. If your hair is black, try an off-black or dark grayish tone. To set, you can spray a little hairspray on your finger and smooth over your brows.

Of course, if you make a dramatic hair color change, you can have your eyebrows dyed to match. Always consult a pro if you're going that route. If you're just going a few shades lighter, a facial hair bleaching kit applied to the brows may be just what you need to help soften dark brows.

LUCIOUS LIPS FOR SPRING AND SUMMER

Want to show of the season's best lip colors? You're definitely no trendsetter if you have dry, cracked lips. Here are some tried and true lip tips to help you maintain a fabulous pout throughout spring, summer and all year round.

1. Exfoliate and Hydrate

Removing dead skin from your lips creates a smoothe canvas for any lip product. Some
suggest using a toothbrush or a nubby washcloth. I like using my facial scrub.
Gently massage over and around your mouth for a few seconds after you're done with your face. Be sure to follow with a lip moisturizer or lip balm worn alone or under your lip color. I like Burt's Bees ($3) all natural lip balms and creams designed to repair, heal and moisturize. Worn day or night they are the ultimate in hydration.

2. Color Inside the Lines

Dramatic liner is passe. Instead, fill in your lips after you've outlined. It reduces feathering,
creates a soft look and increases the staying power of your lip product. Choose a color that
matches your own lip's natural tone and you can literally wear it with everything. Try MAC
Lip Pencil in Stripdown or Cork ($13). It glides on easily with no unnecessary tugging.

3. Matte Must Have

Matte doesn't have to mean dry anymore. The latest matte lipcolor formulations are smooth and creamy and won't cause dryness and peeling. One to try: Lipstick Queen Oxymoron Matte Gloss ($20). Feels sheer as a gloss but goes on matte. It even comes with its own lipbrush.

4. Get Your Shine On

Glossy lips are never out of style. Worn alone over lip liner or to spice up your lipstick, you can't go wrong with sensuous, romantic shine. One of my favs Carol's Daughter All Natural Candy Paint in Grown and Sexy($13.50). Shea butter, aloe vera extract and vitamin E all work to condition, protect and soothe your lips. And you get that sexy, elegant shine to boot.

THE FOUNDATION FOR FABULOUS MAKEUP

I always say, the best remedy for a dull, lifeless complexion is to exfoliate and hydrate regularly. Once you’ve got that down, you don’t want to ruin all of your TLC by using makeup that does nothing to compliment your skin do you? Here’s how you can crank up your makeup’s fabulosity (is that a word?) while still maintaining a naturally fresh appearance.

The Latest and the Greatest

For most of us, wearing some type foundation is a must. Dark under eye circles and skin discolorations are never in style! Luckily, the days of spackling on the old fashioned “pancake” makeup are gone for good. Most modern makeup formulations are skin-friendly and relatively easy to apply. First you need to decide how much coverage your skin needs, and then choose your makeup accordingly. If your primary concern is racoon eyes, and your complexion is otherwise pretty even, then you may be able to get away with just using a concealer and a light dusting of powder. My favorite is MAC Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35 ($15.50). The coverage can be as sheer or as full as you need it.
D.I.Y. Start applying concealer with a brush, sponge or the pad of your finger, from the inner corner beside your nose and blend outward until the dark shadows disappear. You can also blend concealer onto other areas of the face to cover imperfections. Find a color that matches your skintone exactly, or a shade lighter. Powder is a must to create a truly flawless appearance. Whether it’s multi-tasking as a powder/foundation combo, or doing its thing in a more sheer translucent formulation, make sure your skin is well hydrated underneath, especially if it’s dry. A great one to try Illusions Cosmetics Loose Powder or Oil Free Pressed Powder ($15-18). Both absorb shine without causing skin to look dull and lifeless and are great for all skin types. D.I.Y. Always dust on powder (loose or pressed) with a fluffy brush for a fresh finish. Don’t overdo it around the eyes or you’ll emphasize any fine lines. Illusions vitamin-enriched Lustre Lip Gloss ($10) in Carmen is my color of the moment. Named for favorite actresses and films, this gloss feels great on the lips and its non-sticky texture helps to create a glowing complexion…no wonder it’s become a favorite of many Hollywood actresses!

The latest trend in foundation is mineral makeup. Mineral powder is being touted as the best option for a pure foundation, and some say it’s actually good for your skin. One of the best I’ve come across is Valana Minerals Luxury Mineral Cosmetics. This line of mineral makeup has a fantastic color selection, is completely vegan and contains no artificial or harmful ingredients. The Stardust Luxury Foundation ($28) is a concealer, foundation, loose powder and drug-free sunblock all in one! Who could ask for anything more? Apply it with one of her Vegan and Cruelty Free synthetic brushes in the Faux Collection ($17.99-29.99). Just swirl, tap, sweep and viole… radiant and flawless skin. Sample packs and starter kits are also available for purchase. The One of the great things about this line is that it’s formulated for a wide variety of skintones, from fair and creamy to deep-dark brown, and will not appear chalky or "ashen" on the skin like many others on the market (believe me I’ve tried them all). The line also includes Vegan lip, eye and cheek colors and Oasis-Oil Control Powder ($15) a neutral toned formula that won't make your skin feel dry. Now you can look fabulous and do your part for the environment at the same time! D.I.Y Be sure to tap off the excess from the brush before applying to avoid fall-out on your clothing. For severe under-eye circles (like mine) it's best to use a bit of concealer first if you want them to truly disappear.

Airbrush to Perfection

Are you surprised to hear that your favorite actresses and entertainers may not actually have such flawless complexions? By now I’m sure you’ve heard of airbrush makeup. It’s been a staple on television and film sets for years. But it’s not just for the professional makeup artist anymore. Now you can get absolutely flawless skin at home, and it may not be as complicated as you might think.
An airbrush makeup system is basically an airbrush (stylus) attached by an airhose to a compressor. You put in a few drops of foundation, plug it in, turn it on, and airbrush your way to beautiful skin! That’s really all there is to it. Of course, as with any makeup application, it takes a little practice. But you will be absolutely amazed at the results. The “big deal” about airbrush makeup is that it gives you full coverage with a sheer texture, so it looks like you’re not wearing much of anything. And you can apply it in a matter of seconds. But be prepared, the cost of a good system will run you a couple hundrd dollars (comparable to buying a good foundation, powder, concealer and a few brushes). But it’s well worth it because with airbrush makeup, you won’t need those things to get beautiful looking skin!
A great one I found is O2 Cosmetics Personal Delivery System ($319). Comes complete with six foundation colors. Perfect for the novice, this system is easy to use and has a nice range of colors to match most complexions. Their airbrush makeup ($25) is water based, goes on smoothly and evenly, feels light as a feather and leaves a beautiful matte finish. Its humectants help skin stay softer, smoother and younger-looking. The system is compact and won’t take up a lot of room on your vanity. They also have a Tanning Mist ($9.99 4oz) for the face and body that you can use alone or over your foundation for that sun-kissed look.
If you’re a true makeup diva, you’ll love the airbrush system by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC $389). Its water-based, oil-free foundations contain no alcohol or silicone, and are completely Vegan and Cruelty Free. The OCC Skin Airbrush Makeup ($20) mimics the finish that healthy skin has naturally (its neither mat nor dewey), and has one of the widest selections of shades available, including a collection of color adjusters, blushers and highlighters to allow you to achieve virtually any skintone or color you can imagine. Set comes complete with 12 foundations, 12 blushers/highlighters, 6 primary color adjusters, skin primer and airbrush cleaner.
D.I.Y. Shake your airbrush foundation bottles vigorously to ensure the colors are blended well. Test your foundation colors the same as you would traditional foundation…on the jawline. Wear it alone or lightly dust with powder. Make sure you clean the stylus (airbrush) after each use to prevent clogging.

And as a final touch for perfect foundation that lasts day into evening, Model in a Bottle Makeup Setting Spray ($18). As seen on Oprah, Tyra, and Extra, a few quick sprays will hold foundation and eye makeup in place all day and is resistant to smudging, tears, humidity and water. In the original or skin sensitive formula it dries quickly and won’t clog pores. You should also try their uniquly shaped Eyelash Curler ($9) which fits perfectly into your makeup bag and their Long Lasting Eyebrow Sealer ($12) that you can use to hold natural or enhanced brows in place.

Do you long for a vibrant, glowing complexion? Who doesn’t, right. So you exercise regularly, drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, and yet your complexion still appears dull and lifeless! Let’s face it, healthy looking skin requires a bit of effort. Now that springtime has just about sprung, it’s time to take a look at what you’ve been doing (or not doing) to put your best face forward.

A great cleanser is a good way to start down the road to glowing skin. A BREAK FROM OSCAR BEAUTY

I know, I know. It's the day after the Oscars, one of Hollywood's most glamorous nights, and I decided to write about something different! I don't know about you, but I've been a bit overwhelmed with all of the beauty info. Which celebrity was wearing what makeup colors, whose coture gown, and which designer bling. I must say that everyone I saw on the red carpet looked pretty fabulous, save for a couple of disasterous standouts (you know who they are!). What I enjoyed most was the diversity in all of the beautiful looks. And not just the people you always hear about. There was a broad spectrum of style. Whether subtle or dramatic, in bright colors or neutral tones, from Sophia Loren to Viola Davis to the kids from Slumdog Millionaire...at every turn there was someone whose look you could relate to and confidently try at home.

And speaking of trying things at home... I want to tell you about a few great products I discovered by makeup artist Laura Geller. Her baked cosmetic collection was the talk of D.C when First Lady Michelle Obama colored her cheeks with Blush-n-Brighten in Berry on Inauguration day.

I absolutely fell in love with her Spackle Under Makeup Primer ($23). It creates flawless skin and makes your makeup look perfect!

You can treat yourself to the Spackle Trio ($31.50) a great deal which includes the same face primer, plus one for eyes and one for lips.

If you've got oilier skin, try Welcome Matte Skin Enhancer. ($23.50) It minimizes pores and gets rid of shine while creating that same flawless skin texture.

Her Baked Cake Eyeliner Duos ($23) complete with brush, multi-task as both eyeshadow and eyeliner. They feel creamy and wear all day long. Always one for the drama, I actually wore the deeper shade as an eyeshadow and it went on quite smoothly and looked very glam.

One of my favorite products is the Powder Pencil Eyeliner ($15.50). It gives a soft, natural outline and comes in delish shades like Velvet, Chocolate and Amaretto. There's a smudger on one end to help you prefect those bedroom eyes. Sharpener included.

COOL WINTER BEAUTY TREND

Hello makeup divas! Beore we jump into the pinks and peaches that spring makeup will undoubtedly bring, I wanted to pay homage to one of my favorite makeup looks this winter season. Whether at Sunday brunch or on the red carpet, women are rocking the ethereal icy blue and sliver grey eyeshadows.. This color combo seems to work well on virtually every skintone, as you can see. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this trend will stick around for spring. DIY Anyone can pull this look off. Apply color on the lid, then use a deeper shade to contour in the crease. Clear blues, shimmery crème/white or even gold on the lid will give the same effect. If you have a rich skintone be sure to choose color with high pigment. Splurge on Dior 5 Color Eyeshadow in Blue Croisett ($54). Not in your budget? Check out Milani Runway Eyes Fashion Shadows in Backstage Basics (5 bars $7). Rim the entire eye with charcoal or black eyeliner and add mascara. Try Benefit Creasless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner in Skinny Jeans and Town Car Black ($19). Pair these eyes with subtle cheeks and a natural lip color.

FRESH FACED FIRST LADY'S GOT STYLE!

Barack Obama was certainly the man of the hour at yesterday’s Presidential Inauguration. But all fashionistas were watching Michelle Obama, and she didn’t disappoint.

Decked out in a golden-yellow Isabel Toledo outfit for the swearing in ceremony, with green
J Crew gloves and matching Jimmy Choos, she looked glam yet practical. Her choice of color reflected the mood of optimism without being too gaudy. Her face was fresh and natural in neutral toned makeup shades. D.I.Y. Start with glowing skin by exfoliating and hydrating your face. Use a foundation with a natural, rather than mat finish for radiant skin. On the eyes, choose natural eyeshadow colors that look nude on your skin tone. Michelle’s signature black liquid eyeliner is applied on the top lid, getting thicker toward the outer corner. One to try: Lancome Artliner in Noir. It’s got a felt tip brush which makes it easier to apply. Finish with a lash building mascara. For lips, a neutral gloss with a slightly deeper liner blended well is a must. Try Carol’s Daughter Candy Paint gloss in “This is Me” .

For the numerous Inaugural Balls, Mrs. O took a page from Cinderella’s book by donning a white one-shouldered full skirted gown by New York designer Jason Wu. The jewelry by Loree Rodkin was understated and elegant. Her makeup look was subtle glamour. D.I.Y. Smoke out the eye at the lash line with a deep wine like L’Oreal High Intensity Pigment in Unashamed. Apply it just at the lash line and blend up slightly onto the lid stopping well before the crease. Use black liquid eyeliner on top lid only to define. Contour the hollows of the cheeks with bronzer then add a subtle shimmer on the apples. I like Bobbi Brown Shimmer Blush in Coral.

The weekend before the Inauguration, the First Lady shows off her flare for style in this chicblack coat and purple gloves on board the train on her birthday. At the Lincoln Memorial Concert she wore this classy camel and black Narisco Rodriguez design. Her makeup was slightly more intense at the star studded event. D.I.Y. After applying foundation and powder, try Nars Multiple Duo in Portofino/Maui. This dynamic duo can be used everywhere..on the eyes, cheeks, and lips. If you’re a lipstick queen like me and can’t do without, use MAC Pro Longwear Lipcolor in Perennial Rose. It’s a long wearing color base on one end and a clear gloss on the other. No fuss, no mess.

I couldn’t resist including the First Daughters of fashion, Malia and Sasha Obama. In their colorful J Crew “Crewcuts” outfits, they are already following in Mom’s stylish footsteps!

RED CARPET BEAUTY RUNDOWN: The Golden Globes

Hello all! Well the Golden Globes may be history for this year, but the celeb looks live on…that is at least until the next awards show! The recurring theme of this evening was definitely "understated beauty". It was all glamour with very little glitz. Neutral tones, skin baring gowns paired with minimal bling, hair pulled sleek and chic into a bun, glamazons as far as the eye could see. Boy, those Hollywood types sure clean up nicely don’t they? Here are a few of my favorite makeup looks that made their way down the red carpet, along with some tips on how to D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself)
Natural Beauties
Stars like Angelina Jolie, Anna Paquin, Blake Lively, and newcomer Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire, downplayed the eyeshadow and accented their peepers with liner and lots of lash action instead. The lips ranged from smooth shades of peach to pinks and plums, as seen on Sandra Bullock and Taraji P. Henson. A softly blushed cheek completes the look. D.I.Y. Stick with light to medium neutrals on the lid...soft taupes and bronzey-browns work well. Contour in the crease no more than one shade deeper. Liquid or gel liner is your best choice to really define the eyes, in black, brown, grey or navy. Not accustom to liquid liner? Use short strokes that connect, starting at the outside and working your way inward towards your nose. Line corner to corner on top at the lash line, but leave the under eye clean. Line the inner rim on the bottom if you like with a khol pencil. Finish with lots of mascara or false lashes for added glamour.

Nearly Nude
Show ‘em what you’re working with by highlighting beautiful skin like Megan Fox, Elizabeth Banks, Eva Langoria Parker and Vanessa Hudgens. This look works equally well on tanned skin and fair skin as proven by Eva Mendes and Renee Zelwegger.
D.I.Y. Start by exfoliating and hydrating the skin. A great foundation and concealer are crucial for pulling this look off. Your eyeshadow should mimic your natural skin tone, whether mat or shimmery. Outline with black or brown pencil, and again lots of mascara. When choosing a nude lip color, the trick is picking a color that works with your complexion. Fair to medium skin tones look best in peachy or pinky beiges, while olive or brown skinned divas should opt for soft golden or bronze shades with matching lip liner.
Bold Is Beautiful
Not everyone was playing it safe on Sunday. Kate Winslet, Christina Applegate, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway all sported luscious red hot pouts. January Jones of Mad Men made a statement with tangerine, and CameronDiaz wore fushia lips and cheeks to go with her bubble gum pink dress.
D.I.Y. Confidence is the best accessory to go with bold lipstick. Mat or shine...anything goes. Pair it with a neutral eye or go for the color (see Cameron Diaz). Just make sure your eyes and lips are in the same color family, you don’t want to channel the 80’s! A stronger cheek is in order to balance this look. Place the color on the apples and blend up towards the hairline. Blend concealer around the mouth to help prevent bleeding, and a little lip balm or never hurts.
Smoking Hotties
Old Hollywood glamour meets contemporary elegance. Beyonce, Amanda Seyfreid, America Ferrara, and trophy girl Rumer Willis all knocked it out of the park with their sultry looks. And although I thought the dress was a bit much, J-Lo had a very sassy smokey eye/nude lip thing going on. Special kudos to Drew Barrymore and Evan Rachel Wood for raising the bar. And Tina Fey proved that you can be funny and sexy at the same time. You go girl!

D.I.Y. The smokey eye is here to stay! Black, grey and navy eyeshadows still look fabulous. But why not try deep purples, greens and bronze? Begin at the lashline and blend up to the crease. Sweep the same color under the bottom lashes. Black eyeliner is still a must, on the inner rim, smudged under the bottom and on the top. Highlight with a sheer shimmery eyeshadow on the brow bone and on the inner corners of the eye to keep it sizzling. Lips can be nude or add color for more drama.

New Year, Beautiful You

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to my blog! This first full week of the new year is a great time for new beginings. And a fresh perspective often involves a new look. Sometimes subtle changes in your personal style can be a great jump start into the new year. Here are some ideas:

1. Change your hair. It doesn't have to be anything drastic. A shade darker or lighter, or adding subtle highlites can make a big difference. If it's curly, try wearing it straight or vice versa. Cut some wispy bangs or layers. If you're really feeling adventurous, visit the salon for a brand new 'do. Pick something that suits your personality to acknowledge the potential in the coming year.

2. If you don't have a beauty routine...get one. No more excuses. Let's face it, we're not getting any younger and don't we always want to look fabulous? Great skin is always in! There are oodles of products out there for every skin type and in various price ranges. Exfoliate and hydrate is my mantra. For you newbies, start with a cleanser or moisturizer and then add to it gradually. If you're not sure of your skin type check out my article for help. Here are some of my favorite products:

Lancome Crème Radiance Clarifying Crème-to-Foam Cleanser ($24)

Cleans skin and removes makeup in one step. Used with water it lathers nicely. But be careful, a tiny bit goes a long way.

Comodynes Makeup Wipes (about $8)

Never sleep in your makeup again! Keep these on your nightstand and you won’t even have to get out of bed. Choose the best formula for your skin type. Even works on eye makeup.

Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub ($6)

A great skin polisher you can use every day. Helps your skin look radiant and smooth under makeup. Be sure to avoid your eyes.

3. Exercise regularly, eat healthy, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep...yeah, right! Well, at least try to do the right thing. If you can accomplish it at least 80% of the time then you're ahead of the game.

4. Change Up Your Makeup. New year, new you right? If you normally wear lipstick try a gloss on top of it, or all alone if you chose. Play up your eyes with a colored eyeliner or a new mascara. If you don’t wear makeup…start. That “just rolled out of bed” look is soooo last year. Here are a few great products to try.

MAC Lipglass in Frozen Dream ($14)

A sheer pearly-pink shade. Lip Tip: Paired with a warm liner or lipstick it works on all skin tones (no fooling). Gloss first, then outline for a natural looking pout.

Lancome Le Crayon Khol Eye Pencil in Le Bleu de Jim ($23.50)

One of my favs! Goes on easily and has great staying power. Well worth the price. It won’t run out till next year sometime (well not really, but almost.) Eye Expert: Always begin lining at the outer corner of the eye, where lashes are naturally thickest. Get as close to your lash line as possible. If you don’t line corner-to-corner then smudge it toward the ends of the eye or you’ll look unfinished.

Dior Iconic Mascara ($27)

Really defines and curves lashes. The special brush fully coats with no clumps. Making Eyes: Try closing each eye while you apply your mascara. You’ll get coverage from base to the tips with no need for wiggling.
